Philadelphia Phillies beat Cincinnati Reds and cruise through opening round

When people predicted that the National League’s best offensive team might threaten the two-time NL defending champions, they were sorely wrong. The Phillies swept the Reds in what turned out to be a pushover for a divisional series, sweeping Cincinnati in three straight and celebrating with champagne in the locker room afterwards. While this kind of celebration isn’t that common after winning a divisional series, it’s also not common to throw two complete games, including a no hitter.

Pete Rose to be honored by Cincinnati Reds for 25th anniversary
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
Pete Rose, baseball’s infamous gambler, still is not – and may never be – in the MLB Hall of Fame. But the former Cincinnati Reds player and manager will be honored by his former club for the 25th anniversary of his breaking Ty Cobb’s all-time career hits total. The Reds received permission from MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to honor the disgraced hitter for just the second time since being banned in 1989. Rose missed out on the Reds honoring of the 1975 World Series champions in 2000 as well as the old-timers softball game commemorating the closing of Cinergy Field in 2002.

Former Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott’s legacy lives on
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Front Office, MLB,
Marge Schott was a woman who made history. She was the first woman to ever buy a Major League Baseball franchise when she purchased controlling interest in the Cincinnati Reds on December 21, 1984. Throughout her 15-year long tenure, she was a public face of the franchise for reasons good and bad. She was great with kids, signed autographs and kept tickets low, but also didn’t put much money back into the team, preferring instead to keep contracts low and deriding players who didn’t earn their keep.

Where is Joey Votto?
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
If baseball chose a most valuable player for the first half of the season, Joey Votto would definitely be on the list of potential winners for the National League. Despite that, his name wasn’t found on the list of 2010 National League All-Stars. Instead, he’s on the short list for the final vote this week and fans can select him to the final spot on the NL roster, but he’s up against some strong competition.

Sheets rocked by Reds isn’t a problem
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,
Ben Sheets was hit hard again. In his third Spring Training game with Oakland on Monday, he gave up 10 runs without recording an out against the Reds. Yet he and the Athletics claim that, runs aside, it was a good outing. Sheets is recovering from elbow surgery and is trying to return to the form he showed with the Brewers two years ago. Spring starts are the latest step in his return to the mound, and is still projected to start for Oakland on Opening Day.

The Easts dominate the World Series
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Championship, Editorial, MLB, Playoffs,
Since the MLB Players’ Strike of 1994 and the realignment of divisions to include the new wild card format, there have been thirty teams to compete in the World Series. Thirty teams in baseball; thirty teams in the World Series. A perfect world would have welcomed each team to the Fall Classic once, but we all know that’s not the case. Baseball is not that fair. To say that there has been uneven representation of the divisions throughout the years would be a huge understatement, as the level of parity in baseball is about as high as CC Sabathia’s batting average.
